The next morning, Lucifer went to the Cathedral. It was his best chance to find out more about the Spanish Inquisition—an event dubbed by many is evil. But only if the clergymen would let him into their precious library. He needed a good excuse. Even as a fallen angel, it felt blasphemous to use his powers on them.

The Cathedral was impressive and rightfully so at the centre of the city. Not only the size, but the intricate details, the complete picture. He had seen his fair share of churches and other holy structures, but this was on another level.

Instead of following the tourists to the large entrance, he went to the smaller chapel on the side of the cathedral which was still in service. The cathedral was more of a museum now, no longer used for religious purposes, except for special occasions. He hesitated when he came to the entrance. He hadn’t set foot in a church since his banishment and didn’t know if there would be any repercussions. A man pushed past him, focusing Lucifer across the threshold. The man grumbled as he gave Lucifer one last look before disappearing through a door to the side. Lucifer stood there, one foot over the threshold, petrified, and his heart racing. An old woman tapped him on the shoulder and asked him whether he was okay. She grabbed his arm and pulled him towards the nearest bench. “Is this your first time dear?” Lucifer nodded. She laughed and said, “The first time you enter the house of God is always overwhelming. Stay here, I’ll get someone for you, mister.”

He wasn’t overwhelmed because of His presence; it was the fear of the consequences for being there. Would this alert Gabriel of Lucifer’s presence on Earth? Was his brother still keeping tabs on him? A thousand questions crossed his mind and he wouldn’t find an answer to any of them. He looked up at the ceiling; it was covered in the same detailed work as the outside, only lacking the large statues. Instead, there were smaller paintings and busts incorporated in the structural beams. It didn’t take long for him to get lost in the features around him.

The old woman headed towards the group of clergymen at the altar and after a few minutes of talking and smiling, she pointed at Lucifer. One of them noticed the man who’d pushed Lucifer inside waiting by the confessional, while another headed Lucifer’s way.

“My son, how can I help you?” The priest smiled. “I heard you’re a bit overwhelmed to be here.

Lucifer nodded. “I was admiring the beauty of the church, and it took my breath away. I’m looking for my family’s history and my uncle said I might find more information here. I believe it’s in your records,” Lucifer said.

The priest’s eyebrows crawled to the top of his head. “Our records? Why do you think that?”

“I suspect a part of my family was accused of heresy by the Spanish Inquisition.”

As soon as he said those words, the face of the priest changed.
